The Musical Echoes Native Flute School is a two-day intensive program April 23–24, 2015, Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. The flute school is immediately followed by the main Musical Echoes flute festival.
The Flute School offers two days of workshops, presentations, and (most enjoyably) music-making. A main focus of the session will be on the topics of:
- Health & Healing
- Song Composition, and
- Solo Performing
You can come for the Thursday or Friday programs individually, or for the full two-day program. We meet 9AM – 5PM each day.
Approach
This workshop provides a supportive, inclusive, non-critical approach based on three decades of experience in humanistic music education.
We believe that experience and self-discovery form the best bonds with life-long music learning.
We favor facilitated playing rather than traditional lecture-based teaching styles and use a building-block approach that maximizes learning and music-making.
Participants with all levels of experience on Native flutes (even beginners) are welcome! Depending on the mix of participants, we may break out into smaller groups for short periods for specific topics (such as beginner/novice orientation).
Our goal is for participants to come away with the ability to play with confidence, get out of a music “rut”, and an understanding of rhythms, tones, and improvisation.

Michael Brant DeMaria, Ph.D.
Four-Time Grammy® Nominee, Award winning composer and five-time #1 Chart topping recording artist Michael Brant DeMaria is a multi-instrumentalist whose albums and live performances touch his audience and listeners with his sincere and heartfelt music. His last 5 albums have all gone to #1 on the New Age/ZMR Chart and have stayed there for a total of 8 months. His music is regularly heard on XM/Sirius Radio, Soundscape Cable as well as cable, internet and radio stations throughout the world. Michael was also a contributing artist on the Grammy® winning children's album All About Bullies Big and Small in the 54th Grammy Awards.
His album Siyotanka after hitting #1 on the ZMR chart in February 2009, won the Native American Music Award in the Native Heart Category in October of 2009, was nominated for a Grammy® and then won the ZMR Native American Album of 2009.
His follow-up album Ocean remained at #1 for 3 months on the ZMR charts from November 2009 through January 2010. It went on to win the ZMR Awards for Best Ambient Album of 2009 and Best Relaxation/Meditation Album of 2009. The album also became a symbol of healing from the Gulf Oil Disaster in the summer of 2010. Michael has given many healing concerts along the Gulf Coast since the spill using his music and message of hope to help people heal. A portion of the proceeds of Ocean are now being donated to help wildlife recovery from the Gulf Oil Spill where Michael lives. Ocean then went on to be nominated in early December 2010 for a Grammy® for Best New Age Music Album of the Year.
DeMaria’s 3rd installment in his popular Ontos Healing Sound Project is his world music album Gaia, released November 1st, 2010. Gaia was the 3rd consecutive album of DeMaria's to climb to #1 on the ZMR Chart (New Age, World, Ambient Chart) in December of 2010 and went on to be nominated for 4 ZMR awards including Album of The Year, Best World Album and Best Relaxation/Meditation Album for 2010. It went on to win Album of the Year and Best World Album of 2010. ZMR awards are highly regarded in that only radio, cable and internet broadcasters from around the world are allowed to vote. Gaia went on to be DeMaria's 3rd Grammy® nomination for Best New Age Album of the Year in the 54th Grammy® Awards.
Michael's 4th installment in the Ontos Healing Sound Project is Bindu which was his 4th album in a row to reach #1 on the New Age/ZMR Chart which it did debuting at #1 in January 2012 and remained there for 2 months in a row. Many reviewers named Bindu DeMaria's best work yet. Bindu went on to be DeMaria’s 4th solo Grammy® nomination for Best New Age Album of the Year in the 55th Grammy® Awards.
Michael has been the featured musician for world renowned poets Robert Bly and David White in addition to playing onstage with many Grammy winning artists including friend, mentor and teacher Grammy winner David Darling. Michael is also graduate of David’s renowned school for music improvisation and facilitation, Music for People. Michael performs on indigenous and ethnic world flutes, piano, synthesizers, and a wide range of world percussion. He also was a member of Sacred Winds Consort who opened for David Lanz at the 2008 Zion Canyon Music Festival.
In addition to being a Grammy® nominated musician, Dr. DeMaria is a psychologist, speaker and author. It is no surprise that his music has become a favorite for music therapy, massage, acupuncture, meditation, relaxation, stress management and visualization.

Clint Goss, Ph.D.
Clint is a trained music facilitator and performer on world flutes and an array of ethnic fusion world instruments. Clint and his wife, Vera, have facilitated energetic and inspirational Native Flute workshops since 2003. They bring out the musical potential in all participants, focusing on techniques that make music expression accessible to players with all levels of musical experience.
Clint and Vera have facilitated over 60 multi-day Native Flute schools in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Central America, and New Zealand as well as general music workshops at The Omega Institute and Stony Point. Yearly music workshops currently include Flute Haven, Flute Harvest, Native Rhythms, Zion Canyon, and Musical Echoes. Clint also presents on topics such as Flutes and Human Development, Flutes: Health and Healing, Flute Playing Physiology, and the Origins of Music.
Clint has recorded and produced over 20 CDs since 2006 on his Manifest Spirit label, with a heavy emphasis on music enrichment and education. These have included SpiritGrass, the Jam Tracks series for flute players, The Darling Conversations by Grammy®-winning artist David Darling and Julie Weber, The Listening Book and The Musical Life with William A. Mathieu, Alba with Eugene Carr, Mystic Song with Lynn Miller, From War to Peace with Ani Kalayjian, and Flute Haven Journeys with the participants of Flute Haven 2012.
Over the last decade, Clint has developed Flutopedia.com,
an expansive resource for flute players, flute makers, and researchers of the Native American flute. He has also published original research in psychophysiology, respiratory physiology, and ergonomics related to music and the Native American flute.
Clint holds a certificate in music facilitation from the Music for People organization, a Ph.D. in computer science from Courant Institute, New York University, and FAA flight instructor and commercial pilot certificates.

Vera Shanov
In a room full of flute players, Vera provides counterpoint — percussion and rhythm to accompany melodic flute, performance art such as poetry, or the use of visulization and emotion in creating deep music. She makes everyone in the workshop feel comfortable with themselves and their music. Coming from a marketing background, she brings a perspective of “knowing your audience” and encourages flute players to expand their musical repertoire of styles so that they can serve a wider audience.
Vera is the registrar and guiding force in organizing the Musical Echoes Native Flute School. She greets all registrants with a hug and a kiss and makes them feel immediately welcome. Vera provides all the information for workshops in terms of schedules and workshop descriptions. If there are any issues during a session, Vera is the “go to” person who will get the matter resolved.

Payment Plans
Participants have the option of paying on an installment basis. You have the option to pay 50% at the time of registration, then 25% by March 1, 2015, and the remaining 25% by April 1, 2015.

While we greatly prefer (and appreciate) participants registering in advance, we won't turn anyone away who needs to register at the event (but an additional surcharge will apply).
